Christian Fernandez, guitar and vocals

photo of Christian FernandezThe band consensus is, we're glad Christian didn't become a president or a doctor like his parents wanted him to, because the thought of him not singing and playing guitar is a strange one indeed. Then again, he might have changed the definition of "president" or "doctor" had he chosen those paths. Born in Marseilles, France, Christian stole a guitar at age fourteen and learned to play with the wrong tuning until someone set him straight a year later. But his musical debut took place much earlier, as "Brozo el Tenebroso," onstage with his mother, a flamenco singer and dancer who toured France with her five kids in tow. Early musical memories include being awakened in a theater at about midnight one night, being walked out onto the stage in a red hat, and performing in his sleepy stupor for the 3,000 people attending his mother's show that evening. In his early twenties Christian became serious about music, working as a street musician in Europe, Asia, and Africa for about twelve years. He then made his way to Austin, where he says the first band he heard was Susanna's Samba Police. His talent and charisma have graced a number of Austin bands, most notably Cula du Café, Ta Mère, and currently, La Tribu.
