The Family
From the irresistible beat and sinuous melodies of Brazilian music to the soulful songs of urban Peru to the festive cha-chas and passionate boleros of the Caribbean and beyond, Susanna Sharpe's exciting new ensemble Catavento performs a wide variety of Latin American music in both Spanish and Portuguese, with occasional singing in French and English added to the mix. Three vocalists, two guitars, and percussion give this acoustic quartet many options as far as sound and texture. Rich and often innovative three-part vocal harmonies are becoming part of the group's signature sound.
On lead vocals, the versatile Sharpe, formerly of Susanna Sharpe and Samba Police, and charismatic singer/guitarist Christian Fernandez complement each other well. Joining Fernandez on guitar is David Pulkingham, whose beautiful voice is also featured. The playing of Pulkingham and Fernandez is richly textured, virtuosic, and rhythmically strong. Both are seasoned performers and current members of Austin's popular Latin band La Tribu. Anchoring the group on a wide array of instruments is Brazilian percussionist Sergio Santos, a veteran musician whose subtle touch completes the ensemble.
Audiences at the band's Friday night sessions at South Austin's Tree House Italian Grill have responded with enthusiasm.
