A native of the port of Santos in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, Sergio grew up like most Brazilians--surrounded by a rich musical tradition in which the drums of Africa meet the guitars of Europe in a New World setting to create some of the most enticing and varied music on the planet. As a teen, Sergio was probably more influenced by Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles than the sambas of Carnaval. But his musical heritage would work its way back into his life and eventually lead him to playing percussion. Before that, however, a thirst for adventure sent him on a year-long expedition through much of South America, including quite a few miles logged in a canoe on Amazon tributaries. After living in France and then Canada, Sergio found himself in Austin, where he was quickly snapped up by various bands needing a Brazilian percussionist. Since 1986 he has played with the UT Brazilian Ensemble, Quizumba, Susanna Sharpe and Samba Police, and at every Carnaval in the Austin City Coliseum since 1986 with the exception of one.
